Chat with PDF
Upload a PDF, then ask questions and get answers taken from the document.
About the Chat with PDF
Chat with PDF lets you upload a document and ask it questions in plain language. Each answer is based only on what the document says, with page numbers so you can check the source. Follow-up questions work too, because the chat remembers the conversation.
It reads PDFs with selectable text, up to 5 MB and the first 50 pages. The chat lives on the page, so refreshing it starts again. Answers can be wrong, so check anything important in the original.
Who it's for
- Students studying papers, textbooks and lecture notes.
- Professionals who need to find a clause, figure or deadline in a long document.
- Researchers comparing what a report says about specific questions.
- Anyone who would rather ask a document a question than scroll through it.
How to use it
- Click Choose file, select a text-based PDF, and press Upload and start chat.
- Type a question, or click a suggestion such as Key points or Dates and numbers.
- Read the answer and note the page numbers it mentions.
- Ask follow-up questions. The chat remembers the last few messages.
- Open the PDF to the cited pages to confirm anything that matters.
Tips for better results
- Ask specific questions. "What is the notice period for termination?" beats "Tell me about this contract."
- If an answer seems off, ask it to quote the relevant passage and give the page number.
- Questions the document doesn't cover should get an honest "it doesn't say". Be wary of answers that sound sure but have no page reference.
- Don't rely on answers about legal, medical or financial documents without reading the source.
- You get a limited number of questions per session, so combine related questions where you can.

Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF kept?
No. The file is read in memory and not saved. The extracted text stays in your browser page, and it is sent to an AI service with each question so the answer can use the document.
How does it know the answer?
It is given the text of your document along with your question, and instructed to answer only from it. It can still make mistakes, so check the cited pages.
Why can't it read my PDF?
Scanned and image-only PDFs have no selectable text and aren't supported yet. Password-protected files also need the password removed first.
Is there a limit on questions?
Yes. There is a limit per session, and a limit on how quickly you can ask, to keep the service free for everyone.
